Frequently asked questions
What is Tamil Grammar Checker?
Tamil Grammar Checker is an AI-powered writing assistant that automatically detects and corrects grammatical errors in Tamil text. Simply type or paste your Tamil text, and the AI will highlight mistakes and suggest corrections in real time.
How does the AI correction work?
Our system uses advanced large language models to analyse your Tamil text for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax errors. The AI understands the nuances of Tamil script and provides context-aware corrections along with explanations.
Is it free to use?
Yes — you get 12 free grammar checks every 24 hours without signing up. Creating a free account gives you 15 checks per 24-hour window plus document history and DOCX import. Upgrading to Pro unlocks 2,000 checks per month, full error explanations, OCR image scanning, and spoken-to-formal correction.
What is OCR scanning?
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) lets you take a photo or screenshot containing Tamil text and extract it into the editor. Guests get 5 OCR scans per rolling 24 hours; free accounts get 20 scans per month; Pro users get 40 scans per month; and Business users get 1,000 scans per user per month.
Can I type Tamil without a Tamil keyboard?
Yes. With the தமிழ் control on, type or paste Tanglish (Tamil written in English letters) and it is converted to Tamil after each completed word or pasted fragment. Choose Off to keep text unchanged. You can also use a Tamil keyboard at any time.
How do I use voice input?
Click the microphone button above the text area and speak in Tamil. The app uses your browser's speech recognition (best supported in Chrome and Edge) set to Tamil (India). Click the button again to stop recording.
What types of errors does it detect?
The AI detects a wide range of issues including: spelling mistakes, incorrect verb conjugations, wrong use of case markers (vibhakthi), punctuation errors, word-order issues, and commonly confused words.
Is my text stored or shared?
Your text is sent to our AI service only to process your request and is not stored or used for training. We take your privacy seriously and do not share your content with third parties.
Can students use it for Tamil essays and homework?
Yes. Paste an essay answer, paragraph, or full composition and review each correction with its explanation. The explanations describe the grammar rule involved, so it doubles as a learning tool for school and college Tamil.
Does it support spoken or colloquial Tamil?
Yes. Colloquial forms like வர்றேன் or போறீங்க are recognised as valid spoken Tamil rather than flagged as errors, and the spoken-to-formal workflow can rewrite them into formal written Tamil (வருகிறேன், செல்கிறீர்கள்) when you need a formal register.
Can it detect case-marker and verb errors?
Yes. Case-marker (வேற்றுமை உருபு) issues — such as a missing dative க்கு or accusative ஐ — and verb errors like wrong tense or subject–verb agreement are core checks, each shown with an explanation.
Can it help with confusing letters like ல, ள, ழ or ர, ற?
Yes. Commonly confused Tamil letters — ல/ள/ழ, ண/ந/ன, and ர/ற — are among the most frequent spelling mistakes, and the checker reviews them using the whole word and sentence as context.
How is this different from Google Translate or ChatGPT?
TamilGrammar.in is designed specifically around Tamil writing correction. It focuses on targeted grammar and spelling corrections and explains the changes so writers can review them. It also includes Tamil-specific tools such as Tanglish typing, OCR, and spoken-to-formal conversion.
